Eirene Mort – A Livelihood – until 25 February 2018
Canberra Museum & Gallery
Cnr London Crt & City Square, Canberra City
This exhibition marks the 40th anniversary of Eirene Mort’s death at the age of 98. Some of her etchings of sites and old buildingS in the Canberra district are wonderful and there are also watercolours of areas familiar to Canberrans. Her versatility was astonishing and the curator has done an excellent job in telling the story.
From the CMAG website:
“The story at the heart of this exhibition is of a prolific art-
ist, collaborator, teacher, writer, family historian and a ‘new woman’ pursuing a profession in the arts at the beginning of the 20th Century. A self-described woman of “independent means”, Mort was an advocate and proponent of the use of Australian materials and motifs in decorative arts and she translated the English Arts and Crafts
movement to an Australia context.
